As Per Mozilla YouTube’s New Update Has Made YouTube Loading Slower on All Browsers Except Chrome

In comparison to Google Chrome, Mozilla argues that Google has made YouTube load slower on other browsers such as Firefox and Microsoft's Edge browser.

According to Mozilla's Technical Program Manager Chris Peterson, YouTube's new design makeover, which incorporates Google's polymer technology, causes it to load 5 times slower on Edge and Firefox.

In his tweet, he noted the problem and provided a link to a Firefox plugin that addresses the issue and speeds up YouTube loading.

What Caused The Slow Down?

YouTube had a design upgrade a year ago, and Google has subsequently optimised YouTube to run faster on their own platform with the Polymer framework, allowing for "quicker product development."

YouTube's Polymer makeover is based on the outdated Shadow DOM v0 API, which is only available on Chrome, resulting in a significant change in user experience when using Chrome.

In his post, he explains:

"YouTube provides a Shadow DOM polyfill for Firefox and Edge, which is noticeably slower than Chrome's native version. On my machine, the first page load time with the polyfill is 5 seconds, compared to 1 second without. The performance of subsequent page navigation is comparable".

There are solutions to the problem, but the average user isn't interested in the details. Instead, for a better experience, they would switch to Chrome.

How To Fix This Problem?

If you're still using Firefox or Edge, you should check out the following fixes:

  • Install the YouTube Classic extension for Firefox.
  • Tampermonkey for Edge is available to Edge users. After that, you must enable the extension and download a user script in order to force YouTube to return to its original and traditional mode.
  • Tampermonkey is also available for Mac users that use Safari. To activate YouTube Classic, you'll also need to add this script.
